Lip filler doesn’t always turn out exactly as expected. Perhaps you’ve ended up with more volume than you wanted, noticed migration or unevenness, had filler done by an inexperienced provider that you’re unhappy with, or simply decided the look isn’t for you anymore.
Fortunately, dissolving lip filler is often a straightforward option if you want to start again.
All dermal fillers are temporary by nature, with results generally lasting anywhere from 12 to 24 months depending on the type used. But lip filler is most commonly done using hyaluronic acid (HA) filler – and this is the one type that can also be reversed right away, using a natural enzyme called hyaluronidase, rather than simply waiting for it to fade.
So, what exactly is involved in dissolving lip filler? How quickly does it work, is it safe, and what happens if you want filler again afterwards?
Here’s everything you need to know.
Why might you want to dissolve lip filler?
There are lots of reasons someone might decide to dissolve lip filler – and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything has gone seriously wrong.
Some of the most common reasons include:
- Overfilling: Your lips feel or look bigger than you wanted.
- Filler migration: Product has moved beyond the natural lip border, potentially making the lip line look blurred or creating fullness above the lips.
- Lumps or unevenness: Poorly positioned or superficial filler can sometimes create visible or noticeable bumps and ridges.
- Asymmetry: The finished result has made differences between the two sides more noticeable.
- Older filler you’re no longer happy with: Filler placed over several treatments may no longer look as natural or balanced as it once did.
- Changing preferences: You may simply prefer a different look, or different lip shape now.
While filler can occasionally settle or behave in an unexpected way, many undesirable results are avoidable. Poor injection technique, inappropriate placement, too much product, or repeatedly adding filler when it isn’t needed can all contribute to unnatural results – which is why who you choose to perform your treatment matters enormously.
Importantly, dissolving lip filler doesn’t necessarily mean giving up on filler altogether. Sometimes removing old or poorly positioned product gives your injector a cleaner starting point from which to create a more balanced result.
Think of it less as going backwards and more as pressing reset.
What is hyaluronidase and what is it used for?
Hyaluronidase is a natural enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid (HA) in our bodies – a substance we produce naturally, and which is also used in many popular dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®.
A concentrated injectable form of this enzyme is frequently used in medicine and aesthetics to accelerate this natural process – but is perhaps best known for its use in dissolving fillers.
However, hyaluronidase only works on hyaluronic acid fillers. It doesn’t dissolve every type of filler.
So other fillers like Radiesse® (which is made from calcium hydroxylapatite) or similar injectables like Sculptra® (which contains poly-L-lactic acid and works primarily by stimulating collagen) can’t be dissolved with hyaluronidase, or reversed in any other way.
This is one reason it’s so important to understand the type of filler you’re having – and to tell your provider about any previous treatments before having filler dissolved.
How does hyaluronidase work for dissolving lip filler?
Put simply, hyaluronidase breaks down the hyaluronic acid molecules that give HA filler its structure, allowing the filler to immediately disperse and be reabsorbed by the body.
The treatment itself is quick, usually taking about 15 minutes. But dissolving lip filler should always begin with a proper assessment.
The process will typically involve:
- Consultation and assessment: Your injector assesses your lips, reviews your medical history and previous filler treatments, and discusses what you’re unhappy with.
- Planning: They’ll determine what needs dissolving and whether removing all of your filler is actually necessary.
- Patch test: A small amount of hyaluronidase is administered first to check for signs of an allergic reaction.
- Treatment: Once it’s safe to proceed, hyaluronidase is carefully injected into the areas containing the unwanted HA filler.
- Healing and reassessment: After your lips have settled, your injector can assess the result and determine whether further treatment is needed.
How long does it take for lip filler to dissolve with hyaluronidase?
Hyaluronidase starts acting very quickly, and you may notice your filler beginning to reduce almost immediately after treatment.
However, it usually takes up to two weeks to see the final result.
This is because a little time is needed for the filler to fully dissolve and disperse, and for your lips to settle. Sometimes, your lips may even look fuller rather than smaller at first because of swelling. Redness, tenderness, bruising, and temporary unevenness can also occur.
It’s also worth knowing that one treatment is often enough, but not always. Larger quantities of filler, long-standing filler, or certain HA formulations can sometimes require additional treatment.
Can you partially dissolve lip filler?
Yes, sometimes. If the problem is a small area of migration, a lump, or an uneven result, hyaluronidase can sometimes be used conservatively rather than dissolving everything.
However, it’s important to realize that dissolving small amounts of HA filler isn’t perfectly precise. Hyaluronidase can spread within the surrounding tissue and act on other hyaluronic acid in the area, so it’s not possible to pick out individual particles of unwanted filler while guaranteeing that everything around them will remain untouched.
So partial dissolving is possible, but the result depends heavily on careful assessment, placement, and injector expertise.
A skilled injector will assess and explain what can realistically be achieved before starting treatment.
Does lip filler dissolve on its own?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler is always broken down naturally by the body over time, so if you’re happy to let your results fade gradually, you don’t necessarily need to have it dissolved.
Results from HA lip filler usually last around 12 to 18 months, although this varies depending on:
- the filler product and amount used
- where and how it was placed
- how much filler you’ve had over time
- individual differences in how your body breaks down filler
It’s also important to remember that “lasting 12–18 months” doesn’t necessarily mean every trace of filler has disappeared by then. HA filler can sometimes remain in facial tissues for considerably longer.
If you’re unhappy with any aspect of your filler result, waiting for it to disappear naturally could therefore take longer than you’d like. This is when hyaluronidase offers a much faster way to dissolve lip filler and start again.
Is dissolving lip filler safe?
Yes. When carried out by an appropriately trained and experienced medical injector, dissolving HA filler with hyaluronidase is a well-established procedure with few risks.
As with any injectable treatment, there are potential side effects. But these are mostly mild and short-lived. The most common are temporary and include:
- swelling
- redness
- tenderness
- bruising around the injection sites
Allergic reactions to hyaluronidase are rare, but possible. This is why appropriate assessment and patch testing are so important.
Does hyaluronidase dissolve your natural hyaluronic acid?
This is something you may have come across online and be concerned by – and there’s an important distinction to understand.
Because it’s a natural enzyme, hyaluronidase won’t only affect the HA contained in your dermal filler – it also recognizes and breaks down your naturally occurring HA.
This means your lips may look temporarily flatter or thinner than expected initially, after dissolving your lip filler. However, your body continually produces and replenishes its own hyaluronic acid, so this effect isn’t permanent and your lips will soon regain their natural HA levels.
Crucially, hyaluronidase does not dissolve your collagen, facial fat, ligaments, or other structural tissues.
How soon can you get lip filler again after dissolving it?
You can absolutely have lip filler again after dissolving – and for many people, that’s the whole point.
But you shouldn’t dissolve your filler and immediately replace it.
Your lips need time to settle so that swelling can subside, the result can be properly assessed, and any remaining hyaluronidase doesn’t immediately start breaking down newly injected HA filler.
A waiting period of around two weeks is commonly recommended, but exactly when it’s appropriate to refill your lips should be determined by your injector based on how you’ve healed and whether any further dissolving is needed.
The advantage of waiting is that your next treatment can be planned from a much cleaner starting point – based on your natural anatomy and the result you want now, rather than simply adding more filler on top of an existing problem.
Dissolving lip filler at BodyTonic Med Spa Cleveland
If there’s one message to take away from this article, it’s that who performs your treatment matters.
Lip filler is one of the most popular treatments in most med spas, but that doesn’t make it a simple treatment. Many of the results people seek to have corrected – including overfilling, unnatural proportions, poor placement, and some cases of migration – can be associated with inappropriate product choice, placement, or injection technique.
An experienced medical injector understands facial anatomy and proportions, knows how different filler products behave, and – crucially – knows when not to add more filler.
And the same expertise matters when you’re having face or lip filler dissolved.
At BodyTonic Med Spa in Cleveland, we’ll always start with a consultation to assess your lips, discuss your previous treatments, and understand exactly what you’re hoping to change.
If dissolving your filler is the best option, we’ll explain the process and create a treatment plan based on your individual needs. And if you’re hoping to have your lips refilled afterwards, we’ll reassess them once they’ve settled and help you achieve a natural-looking result that works with your features.
Because ultimately, the goal isn’t simply more filler – or less filler.
