Different type of lip shapes

If you’ve been considering lip fillers, you're far from alone.

In recent years, they've become one of the most sought-after cosmetic treatments, thanks in part to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, whose fuller lips have set a trend for enhanced pouts.

But while many people seek lip fillers to achieve that signature, voluminous look, there’s a lot more to this treatment than just following a trend.

As our lip filler shape guide will show, lip fillers are highly customizable. So whether you’re looking for a subtle change that enhances your natural shape or a more dramatic transformation, lip fillers can be tailored to your individual goals.

And the best part? By adding volume to the lips, defining a pout, or correcting asymmetry, the right lip shape can transform not just the lips, but the entire face – enhancing your natural beauty and making you feel more confident than ever.

At BodyTonic, we understand that every face is unique, and so are your goals for lip enhancement. Our expert team is here to guide you through the process, from choosing the perfect lip shape to ensuring your results are noticable yet natural-looking.

Ready to explore what lip fillers can do for you? Let's dive in and discover how we can help you achieve the lips you’ve always wanted.

What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are an injectable treatment designed to enhance or improve the appearance of the lips by adding or restoring volume, smoothing out a pout, and defining their shape.

The most common fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps maintain skin hydration and plumpness. Juvederm and Restylane are some of the most popular and frequently used brands, due to their excellent results, safety, and reversibility.

People often think that lip fillers are just about adding volume, but this is far from the case. They can also correct asymmetry, define the lip borders, and enhance features like the cupid’s bow – subtle changes that have the power to transform the appearance of your mouth

They are a highly customizable and versatile treatment, and while there are a number of popular lip filler shapes to choose from, your exact results and lip shape can ultimately be as unique as you are

Lip fillers typically last around 6 to 12 months, depending on the type of filler used and your body’s response to it, although it’s not uncommon for them to last longer. And with regular top-ups, you can maintain your results for years.

Another bonus of this type of treatment is that it’s also reversible. So if for any reason you change your mind, your HA fillers can be safely and easily dissolved.

All in all, lip fillers offer a wide range of benefits that go well beyond just enhancing the appearance of your lips. Here are our favorite lip filler benefits:

  • More voluminous, plumper, defined lips
  • Improved lip shape, enhancing symmetry and creating balance
  • Can smooth out fine lines around the mouth, helping to rejuvenate the face
  • Enhances your natural beauty by improving proportions between your facial features
  • Highly customizable results
  • Subtle, natural results
  • Hydrating and moisturizing to the skin of the lips
  • Temporary, yet long-lasting
  • Safely reversible
  • Quick and minimally invasive procedure with little to no downtime
  • Safe, reliable, and effective

How to choose the right lip filler shape for your face

People often bring photos of the lips they want to their lip filler consultations, and this is a great way to narrow down the type of style and shape you want to achieve.

But the best way to choose the right lip filler shape for your own face is with the help of an expert practitioner

Understanding the right lip ratios, the anatomy of a person’s natural lips, and how to maintain proportions with other features on the face are all key aspects of deciding the best shape for your fillers.

And while we’ll cover a lot of these points in this lip filler shape guide, ultimately it’s the professionals who will be able to advise you on what will work best for your face and the exact results you can expect.

At BodyTonic, our expert practitioners conduct thorough consultations in which we assess your facial structure and features and recommend the individualized enhancements that will best enhance your lips in the most natural way possible, while also having the greatest possible impact on enhancing your overall natural beauty.

Bear in mind that it’s also possible to do lip fillers incrementally, adding additional volume bit by bit (with a minimum of two weeks between treatments) to achieve your desired result more gradually and ensure you are happy with the final result.

Different types of lips and how to identify yours

There are lots of different types of natural lip shapes, and recognizing your natural shape can be useful in determining the lip filler shape that will look most natural and flattering.

It’s also useful to know your lip shape from a make-up perspective, as there’s a lot you can do to enhance lips even further with the right kind of lipstick, liner, or gloss!

There are nine main lip shapes, which include heart-shaped, round, thin, full, bottom-heavy, and more.

To identify what kind of lip shape you have, simply examine your lips in the mirror. Identify key features such as the proportions between your upper and lower lips, the definition of your cupid’s bow, and the overall shape of your mouth, and then compare your mouth to the different lip shapes shown above.

Popular lip filler shapes

Even though most people want a natural appearance from their lip fillers, when referring to the shapes used for lip fillers, different names are often used

This is because the names generally refer to specific aesthetic techniques, placement of the filler, or desired outcomes, rather than the natural lip structure itself.

For example, some of the more common or popular lip filler shape names include:

  • Classic: a subtle enhancement focused on a balance between upper and lower lips
  • Cupid: when accentuating the shape and definition of the top lip, particularly the cupid’s bow
  • Hollywood: a voluptuous full lip that focuses on an enhanced upper lip
  • Pearl: an emphasis on volumizing the bottom lip, giving a rounded pearl-like effect to the bottom center
  • Supermodel: another full lip, with more focus on a fuller bottom lip
  • Goddess: a more pronounced pout, but without it looking too overly “done”
  • And many more…

However, remember that the best lip fillers should be customized to suit your unique features.

So while these lip filler shapes can be a good guide for what you do, or don’t, want your lips to look like, the exact lip shape you settle on with your practitioner won’t necessarily fit under one specific type.

Here at BodyTonic Med Spa in Cleveland, most of our clients are looking for noticeable enhancements that are as natural as possible, so we’re proud to say we tailor-make a lip shape for each individual client.

Understanding lips anatomy and ideal lip ratios

A key to achieving beautiful, natural-looking results with lip fillers is understanding lip anatomy and the ideal proportions.

The general “golden ratio” for lips is that the upper lip should be about one-third the size of the lower lip for the most balanced and aesthetically pleasing look. Deviating too far from this ratio can result in an unnatural appearance, especially if the upper lip is much larger than the lower.

However, this lip ratio doesn’t need to be 100% fixed – it can always be adjusted based on individual preferences and natural lip shape. For example, if your lips are naturally more of a 50/50 distribution, we’ll often recommend maintaining this.

But the right ratio doesn’t stop at the lips themselves – it must also consider other facial features. For the best overall result, you want to ensure your lips are in proportion to the other features on your face, so that your features all enhance and complement each other rather than too-large lips overpowering your face and detracting from your overall facial harmony.

In terms of your lips’ anatomy, this is critical for your practitioner to understand, rather than you needing to know yourself. But it emphasizes the importance of going to an expert practitioner to ensure the best results.

The lips are composed of various elements, including the cupid’s bow, the philtrum column (the dip above your top lip), the vermillion border (the defined margin of the lip), and more, and understanding each patient’s unique lip structure and how the filler behaves and interacts with these different features is vital for a safe and pleasing result.
