A simple and unavoidable fact of life is that our skin changes over time.
Whether from exposure to the elements, common skin conditions such as acne (which affects a staggering 50 million Americans every year!), or simply as a result of the years passing by, our skin gradually loses that glorious unblemished smoothness of youth and starts to display more wrinkles, scars, and other signs of the life we’ve lived.
And while we don’t want to be erasing all those signs and memories, there’s no denying that when it comes to our faces, most of us are happy to erase at least a few of them… which is exactly what we strive to help the people of Cleveland with here at BodyTonic Med Spa.
Microneedling has become one of the most popular and effective treatments for revitalizing the skin, reducing scarring and wrinkles, and generally maintaining a fresher complexion – largely because of its minimally invasive nature, short recovery times, and impressive results.
And of all the microneedling treatments now available, SkinPen® is undoubtedly one of the best.
So if you’re looking for more information about this popular treatment and what it could do for your complexion, keep reading. Or – book a consultation and come and see us for your own SkinPen treatment in Cleveland, at BodyTonic!
What is SkinPen?
SkinPen is a state-of-the-art medical-grade microneedling treatment. But first, let’s start by recapping microneedling more generally.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that involves using multiple tiny needles to make hundreds of microscopic wounds to the skin. Although that can sound scary, it’s really not. These wounds are too small to see with the naked eye, but penetrate the skin sufficiently as to kick your skin into healing mode: boosting collagen and elastin production and stimulating rapid new cell turnover – the result being smoother more youthful skin and a noticeable reduction in specific skin issues.
The exact results, of course, depend on the exact treatment and device being used… and SkinPen is one of the best on the market. It’s a medical-grade microneedling device that’s incredibly safe (it’s the first FDA-cleared microneedling device in the world) and is clinically proven to fight the appearance of wrinkles and reduce the appearance of acne scars, as well as many other common skin concerns.
It’s a pen-like device that contains a cartridge of single-use disposable needles at its end. As the device is brushed over the treatment area, the needles penetrate deeply but painlessly into the dermal layer of skin, creating millions of controlled micro-wounds. The design of the SkinPen makes it possible for the treatment to be both fast and extremely precise, not to mention completely safe – all of which combine to make it a highly effective, convenient, and painless way of giving your skin a revitalizing reset.
What skin concerns does SkinPen treat?
SkinPen can address a wide range of minor skin concerns, although it’s particularly well known for its ability to treat acne scarring and neck wrinkles.
By stimulating the skin’s natural healing process, it boosts collagen production and generates new skin growth without causing any scar tissue formation, resulting in the creation of new, smoother, brighter, and more radiant skin, and an effective rejuvenation of your entire complexion.
Overall, SkinPen can help address all of the following skin concerns:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles on the face and neck
- Stretch marks
- Surgical scars
- Enlarged pores
- Pigmentation conditions (dyschromia)
- Uneven skin tone/texture
- Age spots or freckles
- And more…
You’ll notice improvements to your complexion and certain skin concerns after just one treatment, but for the very best results three treatments spaced 30 days apart are usually recommended, at which point the more noticable issues such as acne scarring and wrinkles on the face and neck will be markedly improved.
Other SkinPen benefits
Effective rejuvenation and revitalization of your skin is just the start of it. SkinPen comes with a list of benefits that make it easy to see why this treatment is so popular:
- Excellent results: clinically proven to improve the appearance of wrinkles and scars
- Extremely safe: the first FDA-approved microneedling device, made in the USA
- Minimally invasive: next to no downtime or recovery period
- Fast and convenient: quick (often 30-minute) treatment time after which you can continue with your day as normal
- Suitable to all: safe for all skin types, colors, and tones
- Cost-effective: cheaper than other more invasive procedures
SkinPen vs other types of microneedling
When wanting to compare SkinPen vs other types of microneedling, it’s important to understand the variations of this type of procedure. There are three main “types” of microneedling available: traditional, RF microneedling, and at-home microneedling – all of which we go into more detail about in this blog.
The at-home market is now made up of two main types of devices: rollers (the original microneedling devices) and the pen-like devices that have since become the gold standard of in-office microneedling treatments. Unfortunately, the rollers are both less effective and pose more risk of infection, while the pen-style devices can be more effective, but they come with significantly higher risks of damaging the skin due to both penetrating the skin more deeply and requiring far more skill to use. So, as you can probably guess, we don’t recommend at-home microneedling.
SkinPen falls under the traditional (in-office) category and is in itself the gold standard of this category. As the first FDA-approved device for this kind of treatment, it set the new benchmark for safety and cleanliness thanks to its pen-style design with disposable needles, but it also penetrates slightly deeper than more traditional devices, stimulating an even greater healing response and therefore: better results.
RF microneedling was then developed to treat more severe skin concerns – such as more noticeable skin laxity, pigmentation or discoloration issues, or more intense signs of aging. It uses the exact same “micro-wounds” technique as the SkinPen, but combines it with radiofrequency energy in order to generate even more profound results. Check out our blog on the market-leading VirtueRF treatment that we offer at BodyTonic if you want to learn more about RF microneedling.
Is SkinPen right for me?
As a traditional microneedling treatment, SkinPen is aimed at improving minor skin concerns and generally revitalizing and restoring a more youthful radiance to the skin.
Given its non-invasive nature, suitability for all skin types, and proven results, it’s a treatment that pretty much everyone will benefit from.
However, as with most treatments, there are a few instances in which it’s not suitable. People with active skin conditions or irritations, who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who are taking certain medications may not be suited, but your practitioner will be able to advise you of this during your consultation.
